Located in Ribera del Duero, the wines developed here are notoriously dense and complex, with Unico, its signature wine, holding the honor of being Spain’s most costly and desired among all its competitors. \r\nA massive estate, Vega Sicilia spans across 1,000 hectares in total, with approximately one-third of the land used for farming. Operating for over 150 years, the winemaking process has evolved, but the style of wine remains true to its origins.  Historically erratic in its consistency, Vega Sicilia has been owned by the Alvarez family since the early 1980s, bringing the estate a better sense of itself and its identity in the international wine world.\r\nThe primary varietal grown on the property is Tempranillo, with the remaining tracts featuring the fruits of Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves’s labor all those years ago. Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot and a bit of Malbec, enjoy a 20% presence on the land, and are primarily used for blending while Tempranillo remains king.  \r\nVega Sicilia produces three cuvées: Unico, the most acclaimed for its rich, robust blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; Reserva Especial, a blend of the estate’s top-tier vintages; and Valbuena, considered the most junior of the three due to its shorter, five-year maturation process.  The estate also owns Bodegas Alion, which produces Tempranillo-forward wines for earlier release and consumption.  \r\nSpanish wines are finding a new generation of fans due to their unique density. The 2004 Alion is inky purple-colored with an alluring perfume of toasty oak, lavender, violets, mineral, blackberry, and blueberry compote. It has an incredibly intense nose, much more linear and focused than the more flamboyant 2000, with scents of dark cherry, creme de cassis and a touch of honey and melted dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight grainy texture on the entry, a hint of cooked meat inflecting the layers of toasty dark berry fruit. It is very harmonious and perhaps at this juncture, edgier and grittier than the millennial Unico. It is less opulent and more structured than the 2000, but is a more cerebral wine. This wine has been getting closer to the style of the Único, and the blend is from vintages very close to the current release of Único, but somehow this year I think the blend has added some complexity to the bottled wine, which has the heart and soul of the 2010 vintage. In fact, they told me they are keeping more wine to have some older vintages to blend for this Reserva Especial, because in the last few years, the wine has been a little too young for the style that it used to have in the past. This has finesse and some of the Burgundian style of the blends of yesteryear. 17,071 bottles and 214 magnums produced.
