Nature blessed Tuscany, positioning its hillsides as the ideal environment for thriving vineyards, particularly those dedicated to the region’s signature Sangiovese grape.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSangiovese is the dominant varietal grown in Tuscany, and is the cornerstone of nearly all the red wines produced there. As such, it is no surprise that red wine accounts for 75% of the region’s production. Due to its long presence in the area, Sangiovese has come to be known by regional names: for example, in Montalcino, it is known as Brunello, or “beautiful dark one,” as it is a more robust version of the grape. Tuscany’s famously deep and rich Brunello di Montalcino wine is required to be aged for four years prior to release; however, for the more impatient Tuscan lovers, Rosso di Montalcino, a lighter version of Brunello, is produced for earlier enjoyment. Both wines are collector-quality, and feature an earthy, spicy and complex profile with dark cherry notes and cedar aromas. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTravel to Montepulciano and you will hear Sangiovese called Prugnolo Gentile, where it serves as the foundation for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Slightly fresher and more finessed than Brunello, it presents bright red fruits such as cherry, plum and strawberry, with fig and tea leaf undertones and a delightfully balanced acidity. It is aged for three years, and can be stored for over a decade if desired. Rosso di Montepulciano, like its Brunello counterpart, can be enjoyed after only a year of aging, and is one of the better priced wines hailing from the region.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino are two of Tuscany’s most in demand wines, the one with the greatest name recognition continues to be Chianti. Also made primarily with Sangiovese grapes, Chianti’s history is now protected by regulations to maintain and preserve its unique character. The Chianti region, which spans nearly 100 miles from Florence to Siena, includes seven subzones, all named for local cities and towns: Chianti Aretini, Chianti Colli Fiorentini, Chianti Colli Senesi, Chianti Colline Pisane, Chianti Montalbano, Chianti Montespertoli and Chianti Rufina.  Top tier Chiantis, including Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Reserva, require one and two years of aging respectively, and unlike the lesser quality Chiantis, must be 80% Sangiovese and blended solely with red grape varietals. These wonderful wines feature a richer depth of flavor and intensity, and present pleasant notes of tobacco and spice.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2014, superior categories of Chianti Classico were recently given their own additional designation: Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.  These exceptional wines must be aged for a minimum of 36 months and carry at least a 13% alcohol content.  They are rapidly becoming a favorite among Chianti Classico devotees.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn addition to the array of traditional wines it produces, the Chianti region is also the production epicenter of wines known as Super Tuscans. These wines, which first appeared in the 1970s and dramatically transformed Tuscan winemaking, carry the IGT designation which was created in response to their market reception. They feature a modern blend of the native Sangiovese with predominantly French varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and are increasingly in demand by collectors and consumers for their exciting profiles. This medium-bodied red offers superb poise and balance, with a long, inviting finish. It too needs bottle age to reach its fullest potential. For readers looking at the $800 price tag, that is not a typo. It does represent a completely preposterous, egregious and delusional (you get the idea) approach to pricing, especially considering that Graetz, despite his unquestioned talent, has less than a decade of history under his belt. Colore is a beautiful wine, but its intrinsic value is perhaps in the neighborhood of $80 or so. The rest of the price is simply a play on the wine's scarcity (900 bottles produced) rather than a reflection of what is truly in the bottle. I can think of an infinite number of smarter and ultimately more rewarding ways to spend $800 dollars on wine, and my guess is Wine Advocate readers can too. This is the location of Tenuta Biondi Santi, previously owned by the very family credited with inventing the 100% Sangiovese-based wine in the late 1800s. Four generations ago, Ferruccio Biondi Santi produced what would become the first commercial bottling of oak-aged Brunello di Montalcino in 1888. Today, Tenuta Biondi Santi is part of an important trend that is changing the landscape of this popular and profitable wine appellation. It is among the largest—and definitely the most symbolic—of Montalcino’s wine estates to pass from Italian family ownership to foreign investors. Other recent acquisitions to non-Italian buyers include La Cerbaiona (sold to American venture capitalist Gary Rieschel), Podere Salicutti (now owned by a German restaurant entrepreneur), Podere Brizio (sold to Argentinian businessman Alejandro Bulgheroni) and Poggio Antico (bought by Belgium’s Atlas Invest). In late 2016, the Biondi Santi family signed a partnership deal with France’s luxury goods firm Européenne de Participations Industrielles (EPI) for a majority stake. According to the Italian financial daily, Il Sole 24 Ore, the deal was valued at 107 million euros. It includes the brand, the Tenuta Greppo property and 26 hectares of Sangiovese vines. Although I was not independently able to confirm this myself, the Italian daily La Repubblica reports that Jacopo Biondi Santi has maintained a 7.99% stake in Tenuta Biondi Santi Spa. The Chief Executive Officer is Olivier Adnot who was born in Champagne and would later become winemaker and director of Château La Verrerie. I visited with Olivier Adnot and Tancredi Biondi Santi in mid-January to get a better sense of the strategy for the future. I had bad luck with a vintage that has every reason to impress, seriously impress, and for that reason, I am putting a question mark next to my score. There is a vegetal note that is out of place, and although it appears only in brief and contained pluses, I kept finding it each time I returned my nose to the glass. It reminded me of green olive or dried garden herb. The bouquet delivers dark plum, prune, earthy notes, menthol freshness, camphor ash and pronounced minerality. The wine shows beautiful elegance, freshness and silkiness in terms of mouthfeel. This vintage was characterized by extreme diurnal shifts that reached as high as 30 degrees Celsius during the days toward the end of August, and dropped down to ten degrees Celsius at night. On the positive side, that green note recalls balsam herb, and on the negative side, it feels a tad stringy and astringent.
