{"title":"Wine List: Spain","description":"\u003cp\u003eWith its varied, expansive landscape and pockets of differing climates, Spain is home to a broad spectrum of grape varietals and, by extension, an interesting spectrum of wine types and styles. Even more impressive is that the country exceeds all others – including France and Italy – in the amount of land dedicated to vineyards, and can boast of a fairly prolific volume of wine production. Perhaps this is due to Spain’s long history of viniculture: while archaeologists believe that indigenous grapes existed on the Iberian Peninsula as far back as 4000 B.C., the origins of Spain’s serious winemaking are credited to the ancient Phoenicians who founded the trading hub of Cádiz around 1100 B.C. With their settlement came a more sophisticated approach to the joys of the vine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c!--read_more--\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the millennia that followed, Spain’s wine industry was greatly impacted by foreign conquests. The Romans opened the door to robust trade across the Empire, while the Moors, who conquered the region in the 8\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e century, abruptly closed it because of their religious opposition to alcohol consumption. The years that followed were erratic, but by the late 15\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e century, the Spanish Reconquista had come full circle, breathing new life into Spain’s wine production and trade. But the greatest foreign influence on the country’s winemaking was by far the phylloxera epidemic in the mid-1800s which dramatically devastated European vineyards, particularly those in France. The epidemic prompted French winemakers to cross the bordering Pyrenees and emigrate to northeastern Spain, bringing their exceptional winemaking knowledge and expertise with them. Settling primarily in the regions of Rioja and Navarra, they elevated Spanish viniculture by introducing oak-barrel aging and meticulous blending. To this day, the country’s powerful Rioja wines, featuring Spain’s hearty red Tempranillo grape, remain its most elegant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpain is divided among seventeen autonomous regions, and remarkably, each one of them participates, to lesser or greater extents, in winemaking. While the greatest number of vineyards are found in central Spain’s La Mancha region that extends south and east of Madrid, the most desirable hail from the coastal regions. The cool, damp Galicia region, nestled in the country’s northwest corner, is home to Rías Baixis, known for its delicious whites driven by the Albariño grape; the warmer Castilla y Leon, located east of Galicia and featuring the Toro and Ribera del Duero’s Tempranillo-based reds; Andelusia to the south, where Sherry production dominates the sub-region of Jerez; the northeast corner’s Catalonia, famous for its popular Cava, Spain’s best version of sparkling wine; and La Rioja, whose wine most closely represents the influence of Bordeaux.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough Spain cultivates hundreds of varietals, the dominant grapes found in Spanish wines are few. In the most popular reds, Tempranillo, which comprises one-fifth of Spain’s vineyards, dominates, followed by Garnacha, Bobal and Monastrell, all used for mid- to full-bodied blends. Leading whites include the native Airén, which accounts for close to 25% of the country’s vineyards; Palomino, used primarily for Sherry production; and Albariño, which is at the heart of the crisp, vibrant and highly popular Rias Baixas. And unlike neighboring Portugal, which has remained quite faithful to its indigenous flavors, Spain has also become more open to embracing international varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and even Sauvignon Blanc, all of which are enjoying higher numbers across the country’s vineyards.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpain’s modern winemakers have come to appreciate the need for, as well as the benefits of, modern winemaking techniques. No longer timid or resistant to change, they are replacing outdated protocols with new technology and leading-edge innovations. The result is the production of more competitive wines that, with their higher depth of quality and character, are getting noticed by critics, connoisseurs, consumers and investors alike. Government transitions have also helped, including the rollback of irrigation restrictions and revised quality control guidelines. In fact, Spain has instituted a unique classification system that includes nearly 70 designated quality wine regions named as Denominación de Origen (DO), with only Rioja and Priorat honored with the premium status of Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOC or DCOa). A third designation, Vino de Pago (VP), has been given to only thirteen wines, all of which must be grown and bottled at an esteemed Spanish winemaking estate. In tandem with these classifications, both the DO and DOCa offerings are further identified via one of four additional aging distinctions: Joven, which are young wines with minimal if any barrel aging; Crianza, aged for at least two years; Reserva, aged for three years; and Grand Reserva, aged for five years. A key attribute of Spanish wines is the fact that they are aged prior to being placed on the market, translating to nearly zero “cellar time” prior to peak consumption.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow that Spain is well on its way to becoming a truly viable contender in the global wine marketplace, it is determined to keep refining its production style and quality. The hand-destemmed grapes fermented in a small vat, and the wine matured in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels for 18 months. Graciano is a variety that likes heat, and it ripened well in the 2015 vintage, but the wine doesn't show heat. In fact, there is less difference between this 2015 and the 2016, at least not as much as I felt in other wines. It's a little more Mediterranean, with some aromatic herbs (rosemary) intermixed with the textbook black pepper aromas of the variety. The palate is medium to full-bodied. It has a deeper color than the 2007 with a splendid nose that jumps from the glass. It should easily drink well for another 30-40 years. It simply does not get any better. No visit to Rioja would be complete without a visit to Artadi and maestro Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle. Artadi’s most recent releases are the 2007s which were reviewed in Issue 183. On this occasion, we sampled the promising 2009s from barrel in addition to the 4 vintages of the flagship Vina El Pison (all of which have been previously reviewed, the 1995 and 1998 by Robert Parker). One of the most memorable days in Rioja was spending an afternoon in the company of the inimitable Benjamin Romeo, the tour de force behind Bodega Contador. We flitted from one patch of twisted ancient vines to another, mainly around the medieval village of San Vincente, Romeo again and again propounding his mantra that terroir creates great wine. This involved one perilous drive through vegetation as thick as the Amazon until the 4x4 exited into a parcel of century-old, gnarly Tempranillo vines (upon which he mentioned that they were far more accessible on foot). Since leaving Artadi in 2000, he has gradually acquired around 80 parcels of old vine material, vinifying the fruit in a simple, modern, efficient winery, inaugurated in 2007, a facility that places functionality over aesthetic charms. Benjamin himself comes across as an intense, passionate, uncompromising winemaker, a little distant and apprehensive at first, but warming to someone who is patently interested in terroir. Bodega Contador is certainly a slick operation, fastidious down to the last detail, resulting in a set of sumptuous, silky smooth, curvaceous Rioja wines that are seductive, yet deserve considerable cellaring. Moving on to the 2010s, readers should note that these were bottled a week prior to my tasting them.
