One of Gevrey-Chambertin’s lesser-known grand cru vineyards, the grapes of Charmes-Chambertin yield some of the softest Pinot Noir in Burgundy. Classified as a grand cru in 1937, the vineyard rests on low, shallow slopes, lending it rich, well-drained, stony soils that are optimal for strong roots and vines.
Sunshine is more elusive; however, the lack of consistent sun is why the style of wines made from these grapes is generally light, captivating and ethereal. Because its neighboring vineyards tend to yield more powerful, complex wines, Charmes-Chambertin has a bit of an inferiority complex. This hasn’t been helped by some protests by other growers and critics regarding its grand cru status.
