Enjoying an appellation that covers both Pinot Noir reds (35%) and Chardonnay whites (65%), the 700+ acres of Chassagne-Montrachet are based in the Côte de Beaune, and is often credited with the 20th century’s increase in white wine production – a trend with an impact that has lasted.
Three grand cru vineyards grace the region: Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, with the last being among the most southerly of the region’s grand cru plots. In addition, Chassagne-Montrachet also enjoys 55 premier crus, al dedicated to Chardonnay. Soils are high in limestone, especially on the slopes of the Côte d’Or which extend from Dijon to Santenay. Southern section, high in limestone and gravel, are conducive to quality Pinot Noir growth, while the north, with its marlstone presence, ushers optimal Chardonnay farming.
The climate is typical continental – warm, dry summers and cooler winters – but always with a threat of frost in early spring.
