Resting on the highest slopes of the Montagne de Corton lies Le Corton, a climat of the Corton Grand Cru appellation in the Côte de Beaune. Its position, a departure from most grand cru sites, sits nearly 1,200 feet high on the hill, allowing optimal sunlight on a daily basis, and safety from storms provided by tree lines that grow directly above the vines.
95% of Le Corton is dedicated to Pinot Noir, but that last 5% produces a truly formidable Chardonnay called Corton Blanc. Corton reds are known for their favorable development, lending credibility to the adage of wine getting better with age. They are earthier in flavor than many of Burgundy’s other Pinot Noirs, presenting leather and deep berry notes. Corton Blanc, conversely, is fruity and bright, and features overtones and fig and pear which are more common among the cooler western areas.
