On 23 areas of land on the upper slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin’s grand cru belt lies Mazis-Chambertin, a grand cru vineyard on the Côte de Nuits. Sharing its location with the famous Chambertin vineyard, it added the prestigious suffix to its name in the 19th century, following the same protocol as the other seven grand cru sites in compliance with Napoleonic law.
It was formally classified as grand cru in 1937. Mazis-Chambertin is blessed with chalky, limestone-dominant soil that make for a perfect Pinot Noir environment. Drainage is excellent, and the continental climate encourages the retention of desired acidity levels. Dedicated to Pinot Noir, the character style of wines from this appellation are rich and robust, much like those hailing from its neighbor, the Clos-de-Bèzeclimat.
