Bonnes-Mares, a 37-acre climat located on the mid-slope of the Côtes d’Or, is a grand cru vineyard dedicated to Pinot Noir. Its wines are famous for the strength, aggression and full-bodied character that separates them from many of its competitors.
It is believed that the vineyard was named for the “Bonnes Meres,” or “good mothers” of the Notre Dame de Tart Abbey which was based on the land in the 12th century. The name of Bonnes-Mares’ nearby grand cru sister vineyard, Clos de Tart, was likely inspired by the same. The abbey was the first Cisterian house for women.
Highly fragmented with visible soil variations, Bonnes-Mares counts over 30 producer-climat owners to its credit, making the vineyard one of the most diverse in Burgundy. The light, limestone soil of southern Chambolle, which produces smooth and silky wines, is in contrast to those of, for example, Morey-Saint-Denis, which feature a much richer soil and accordingly, a much more robust array of wines.
Because of this considerable number of owners and styles of influence, terroir is playing a much larger role in the brand and image of the wines hailing from Bonnes-Mares.
