Prestige. Luxury. Elegance. These are only some of the words that the name Gevrey-Chamberlin elicits. Often called the King of Burgundy wine and home to nine grand cru vineyards (with eight of them carrying the name “Chambertin” as a nod to the greatest, Le Chambertin), the village produces many of the most desired and esteemed red wines in the world. This may be a reflection of its long history in the area: archeologists have stated that Gallo-Roman vines dating as far back as the 1st century BC have been found in Gevrey-Chambertin, and may have very well been the first vines planted in Burgundy.
The limestone-dominant grand cru vineyards occupy the southern end of the village, and lie on the mid-slopes of the famous Côte d’Or escarpment. Each of the nine expanses has its own appellation, and produce the most expensive wines in the Gevrey-Chambertin portfolio.
Premier cru vineyards reside more to the west, and deliver wines of such high caliber that it has been argued that they should be reclassified as grand cru. The remaining sections feature village-level vineyards which produce wines in the highest volume. While not prestige labels, they nonetheless feature wines of outstanding depth, character and intensity.
