When you think of fresh, aromatic and highly collectable Pinot Noir wine, Griotte-Chambertin is one of the first grand cru vineyards that comes to mind. The nearly 7 acres climat is based on the slopes below the Clos de Bèze and Le Chambertin, and proudly carries the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation.
Unlike many of its competitors, it faces northeast rather than east or south, allowing its sun-challenged grapes to develop more slowly. As a result, production numbers fall well behind other regions, but the smaller quantities directly correspond to the quality.
Griotte-Chambertin wines are some of the most globally desired, and quite frankly, the most costly. Soil in Griotte-Chambertin is rocky, with good drainage and a chalky topsoil, prompting the vines to develop strong, long roots, keeping the grapes’ sugar and acidity in check.
