It is quite possible that the world’s best Chardonnay may hail from this 13th century grand cru vineyard who name speaks elegance: Le Montrachet. Found on the slopes of the Montrachet hill overlooking Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, the white wines from Montrachet are among the most desired and by far the most expensive.
The history of Le Montrachet goes back for centuries, as the land was originally cultivated by Benedictine monks. It was, however, confiscated after the French Revolution. In 1937, it was honored with its own appellation.
Only 20 acres, La Montrachet’s vineyards enjoy the optimal spot on the Montrachet hill. Positioned to face the southeast, they have the advantage of consistent sunlight as they develop in rich limestone soil. The slope of the terrain also promotes excellent drainage so critical to strong root and vines and the subsequent wines the harvests will create.
