Originaly known only as Vosne, the Vosne-Romanée commune in the Côte de Nuits changed its name in 1866 as a nod to its more treasured vineyard, La Romanée. This region has been associated with fine wine production for centuries due to the monks of the Saint-Vivant monastery, some of the finest winemakers in its history.
Pinot Noir rules the region, although a very small amount of white varieties are grown to keep the soil balanced and plant-worthy. The commune’s optimal soil lies on the mid-slops of the Côte d’Or, where the 67 acres of the dominant grand cru vineyards are located. These acres are broken down into six of the most recognizable names in fine Burgundy wines: La Grande Rue, La Tâche, Richbourg, La Romanée, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and at the top of the list, Romanée-Conti. These plots are responsible for many of the greatest red wines in the world.
